After Ashbery

 · Poetry

I’ve had it up to here with difficulty.
This level of nonsense can’t be seen,

but God can’t be, either.
Give him new clothes and a makeover.

He can sit in a café and predict
the order will be right.

How many times can you get it wrong?
The options: eggs, bagel, stalemate.

Let’s reconvene when I get to the hole —
that is, when it’s eaten whole.

Deposition is not a proposition
and tomatoes are fruit, though they don’t

need to be classified. Perhaps the famous
poet named his book Some Trees

because some, not all, were saved.
There is room for another king or queen.

If only you could remember the game,
the process of naming these things.
