Dream of a Chemist

 · Poetry

He is the magnesium,
dissolved in absolutely pure ether
under a catalytic influence.

The legs recall an impression
of the previous evening:

a state of semi-sleep
his feet beginning to dissolve,
knees getting soft

her responding pressure
against his lower thighs.

She is the magnesium.
He wakes, reaches down and feels,
repeats the dream to himself.

Found poem taken from Chapter Six, “The Dream Work,” of Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams. Translated by A.A. Brill (1911).
